Diary of a voyage of exploration to New Guinea [manuscript]. 1885-1886.

Two vols. (7" x 4") manuscript of a voyage of exploration to New Guinea in 1885 by Rev. Poett on the form of a daily record to his wife; Letter from Rev. Pederson (9 Aug. 1963) reads - "A syndicate of nine men were formed and placed under the leadership of a Captain Strachan. A small schooner was chartered or purchased, and Captain Strachan, as well as being the leader of the party, was placed in command. The object of the voyage was to discover timber in commercial quantities, particularly cedar, also good agricultural land, and if possible, gold. The party duly set out and reached New Guinea where certain exploration work was carried out, but met with little success. The volumes deal mainly with hardships endured at sea and on land, and was of three months duration." The diary is very critical of Capt. Strachan and gives details of the personal friction between Poett and Strachan.
