Educated in Adelaide, London and Heidelberg. Travelled to the Finke River, 1881. Gave an account of his explorations in The Sources of the Finke River, 1886. He contributed several papers relating to Central Australia to the Royal Society of S.A. and worked for some time on a dictionary of the Arunta language. He published Back in the Stone Age, 1936.
