Miles Franklin was born in 1879, a fifth-generation Australian, and grew up on grazing properties run by her family in the Monaro region of New South Wales. At nineteen, she wrote 'My Brilliant Career', an important study of the opportunities and expectations faced by young Australian women in the 1890s. The Women's Trade Union League was founded in Boston in 1903 during the annual convention of the American Federation of Labor. Local branches were organized within a year in Boston, Chicago and New York. The League worked through unionization campaigns, educational programs, and legislative lobbying to improve the working conditions of women in the industrial labor force.
