John T. Gowlland was born on 10 July 1838. He joined the navy in 1853 and served in the Crimean war. He later assisted with survey work in the Chincha Island group off Peru, Vancouver Island and Straits, and in determining the northern boundary of the USA. He was appointed to the Australian survey as chief assistant in 1865, and when Captain Sydney retired took command of the survey of the New South Wales coast. He commanded a relief expedition in 1872 to search for the brig "Maria" and rescued ...
