The diary describes voyage from Gravesend to Melbourne on board the Planet, 10 Apr. - 5 Aug. 1857, and life in Melbourne during the period, with reference to current events as well as family matters. The papers also include copies of letters from Hooker and his family to relations in England, 1857-1860. These are transcribed in various hands. They describe life in Melbourne, and current events as well as family matters. Also included is a list of the descendants of W. E. Hooker, 1861-1935, and a copy of a letter by Isabella Webster, 1865, describing a journey from Melbourne to Wood's Point, Victoria.
