Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia. Third Governor of New South Wales. Was Superintendent at Norfolk Island from 1788 and in 1791 was appointed Lieutenant-governor of Norfolk Island.
