Family papers [manuscript]. 1786-1900.

The papers consist of journals written mainly by Henrietta Stephen, letters including some written by William and Priscilla Ravenscroft before their marriage in 1795, miscellaneous items including family trees and publications by or relating to members of the Stephen family. The journals give a graphic account of city and country life in England from the end of the eighteenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century. Apart from details of family life there are also lengthy descriptions of national events such as the coronation of George IV in Westminister Abbey in 1822, the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the celebration of the end of the Crimean War. The journals also describe Melbourne in the mid nineteenth century where the Stephens were friendly with members of the legal profession and others including the Chief Justice Sir William Beckett, Mrs Bunny (mother of artist Rupert Bunny) and Bishop Perry, the first Church of England Bishop of Melbourne.
