Two typescripts of talks broadcast by Margaret Boyd in Melbourne: "A classic that was saved by a woman", 1945 Oct. 23 and "Victoria's lady of literature", 1952 May 30. Both talks detail the life and achievements of Kate Baker in fostering Australian literature and particularly her promotion of Joseph Furphy's "Such is life"

Born in Ireland, Baker came to Australia as a child. While she was a school teacher in Victoria, she became acquainted with Joseph Furphy, and encouraged him to write. Joseph Furphy, the writer, was born at Yering, near Yarra Glen. He is best known for Such is life (1903) published under the pen-name 'Tom Collins'.
