Includes a brief description of the gold rush days at Cooper's Creek and Ballarat. McCaul was an accomplished artist and the sketchbooks include scenes from the voyage to Melbourne and the homeward voyage Melbourne to London on the Norfolk, 1858, as well as a Cobb & Co coach, Mount Macedon, Plenty Ranges and gold digging scenes. Diary kept by Gilbert McCaul on voyage to Australia October 2 to December 31, 1855, in the Sea Star from Glasgow to Melbourne.
