Sierra Leone Records 1989-2002

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission support in Sierra Leone. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sierra Leone (ECLSL) in mission efforts. The records are from 1989-2002. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. Daniel W. Olson and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Record types include minutes, budget proposals, typewritten business correspondence, email correspondence, progress reports, activity reports, trip reports, financial statements, agenda, meeting notes, consultation proceedings, topical papers, and audit reports. Subject matter includes the work carried on by the ECLSL and its officers as well as programmatic work including evangelism efforts, leadership training, work with those afflicted with HIV/AIDS, civil war refugees, and investigation of financial and administrative malpractices of the ELCSL. While this series includes records related to the ECLSL and its work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records.
