Senegal Records 1977-2002; 1988-2002

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in Senegal. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Eglise Evangelique Lutherienne du Senegal (EELS) in mission efforts. The records are from 1977-2002, but the bulk date from 1988-2002. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. James L. Knutson and the Rev. Olin K Sletto. Record types include meeting reports, architectural proposals, project progress reports, typewritten business correspondence, email correspondence, architectural drawings, project proposals, annual reports, job descriptions, a school yearbook, handbooks, brochures, financial statements, budgets, expense reports, balance sheets, audit reports, newsletters, trip reports, and activity reports. Subject matter includes health care, literacy, education, agricultural development, evangelism, drought relief, and Christian-Muslim relations. The bulk of the records pertain to the work of ELCA missionaries in Senegal and the administration of their missionary association. Almost all business records pertain to the association and not the EELS. Other records in the series pertain directly to programs and project in specific subject areas such as primary health care for women or literacy. There are also records relating to the working relationship between the ELCA missionaries and the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission in Senegal. While this series includes records related to specific assemblies and committees, it does not have complete sets of meeting minutes and in most cases, there are many gaps in the records. This caveat also holds true for serial publications, audit reports, financial statements, and project reports. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records. Many of the records are written in French.
