Papers, 1785-1818.

This collection represents primarily the financial papers of Joel Wakefield, of Dudley and Oxford, Mass., who evidently conducted a general store. The papers include many receipts (e.g., church dues and various debts) and accounts, 1797-1818, with area townspeople for liquor, cloth, sugar, molasses, and fish. There is a subpoena concerning an outstanding debt of Joel Wakefield, 1792; a writ issued against him for "beating and wounding the plaintiff's sow," 1794; and a notice from leaders of the Thompson Baptist Church concerning his reinstatement, 1802. The collection also contains land deeds and survey sketches of property held by Wakefield in Oxford and Sutton, Mass. The papers of Tubal Wakefield, of Dudley, Mass., include the plan of a lot in Dudley, 1794, and a call for debts due his estate, as well as a land deed signed by his executor Joel Wakefield to John Larned (1758-1844) in payment of Tubal's debts, 1795. There are also a few notes pertaining to the need for settling the dissent within the Baptist Church of Elder Solomon Wakefield, a preacher in Thompson, Conn., and Webster, Mass., in 1802.
