Public notice to persons occupying temporary habitations on land in or near Melbourne and Williamstown, regarding the auction of this land taking place on 1st June, 1837, in Melbourne. (This was to minimise the inconvenience of the occupants having to travel to Sydney to purchase the land, according to established regulations.) The blocks were numbered 2, 4, 12-14 and the boundaries were: No. 2--Flinders Street, William Street, Collins Street & King Street; No. 4--Flinders Street, Elizabeth Street, Collins Street and Queen Street ; No. 12-14--Collins Street, Swanston Street, Bourke Street & William Street. The notice was written and signed by William Lonsdale, Police Magistrate, on behalf of the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke.

Lonsdale, William, 1799-1864

Captain William Lonsdale, of the Fourth King's Own Regiment, was the first administrator and Police Magistrate of Port Phillip (1836). Born in England in [1799], he joined the Army in 1819 and arrived in Sydney in 1831, becoming a Captain in the King's Own Regiment in 1834. He arrived in the Port Phillip District by HMS "Rattlesnake" on the 29th September, 1836.
