"The only use I can be of in the business is as a pioneer to remove obstacles, use me in this way, and I shall be happy". Thus wrote Ramsay to Wilberforece on Dec. 27th, 1787 in a letter copied into this volume, and it is as a pioneer of abolition of the slave trade that he will be remembered. Included also are copies of many other letters on the same subject, to Wilberforce, Lord Hawkesbury, Lord Sydney and others. There are also long dissertations on the evils of the trade and the methods of traders and planters, and some thirty pages occupied with questions such as might be asked by a committee of investigation, with Ramsay's answers. A few pages contain other matter, notes on poor relief, a Memorial on the Supplying of the Navy with Seamen, etc., but the greater part of the book is taken up with the problem of the slave trade. One long article, for example is headed: "Observations made by the Reverend James Ramsay of Teston in a Residence in the Island of St. Christopher of 19 years ending Aug. 1781 concerning the treatment of Slaves". Taken as a whole, the book comprises a valuable summary of the arguments of the Abolitionsists.
