The letters have been written from Carlton, Emerald, and South Yarra in Victoria, and Kings Cross in New South Wales. Three letters each have been written to John Le Gay Brereton, William Moore and Moore's wife, Dora Wilcox. They mainly discuss theatre and dramatists, and Esson's own work. One press cutting has been pasted in, from the Bulletin's Red Page, dated 27 October 1910. Also pasted in is a one page typescript, 'W.B. Yeats on Australian drama'

Poet, academic, librarian. Brereton was Librarian of the University of Sydney (1902-21) and Professor of English Literature (1921-33). Born in Edinburgh 1879, he was educated in Melbourne. During a visit to Europe he became friends with the Irish playwrights including Yeats and Synge. He turned to journalism.
