Irene Mitchell was born in Melbourne. Her professional acting career started in 1932. She began acting with the Melbourne Little Theatre Company in 1934 and later stage managed and directed many of its productions. She was the artistic director of the Company and its successor, the St Martin's Theatre Company, from 1956 to 1973. She was awarded an M.B.E. in 1975. From the description of Papers. 1925-1977.
