Major A.E. Saggers was commanding officer "A" Company, 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion and Special Reserve Batallion, A.I.F. during the battle of Singapore in 1942. At the fall of Singapore, Major Saggers and his surviving men spent over three years as Japanese prisoners-of-wars, including work on the Burma-Thailand Railway.
