Burning of the Black Ball clipper ship "Eastern City" en route from Liverpool to Melbourne, 1858 [manuscript]. 1995 July 10.

Describes the experience of the passengers and crew of the Eastern City, which left Liverpool on 10 July 1858 and caught fire 600 miles off the Brazilian coast, after which they were rescued and taken on to Cape Town on the Merchantman. They later travelled to Melbourne on the Caroline Elizabeth, arriving 19 Nov. 1858. Includes a personal account by Mr J. Fowler, a cabin passenger. Transcribed by Jennie Redmond, 10 July 1995, from an article which appeared in the Herald (Melbourne), 15 Nov. 1858, and which first appeared in the Cape Argus (Cape Town), 17 Sept. 1858.
