Carlo Giorgio Domenico Enrico Catani, civil engineer, migrated from Italy to Melbourne in 1876, and joined the Dept. of Lands and Survey. Some of the works under his direction were the draining of the Koo-Wee-Rup swamp, improving the River Yarra, the laying out and planning of the Alexandra Gardens, and the reclamation of the foreshore of St. Kilda. Frederick Thomas Strode was born in Maryborough, Vic.; worked as a carpenter; enlisted on 6 July 1915 (no. 1961); served as a private with the 8th Field Company Engineers; and was repatriated to Australia on 4 May 1917.
