The collection includes correspondence, photographs, notes, research material (primarily photocopies) and manuscript drafts relating to the researching and writing of Cochrane's book Simpson and the donkey: the making of a legend (1992). The research material gathered by Cochrane documents the life and legend of stretcher-bearer John Simpson Kirkpatrick, who died in the Gallipoli campaign of World War I. Among the correspondents are Ken Inglis, Bill Gammage, Jim Henderson, Humphrey McQueen, John Hirst, John Herouvim, Peter Stanley, Barry York, Alan McLean, Craig Munro, Catherine Snowden, Ian Duffield, Chris Pugsley, Ann Richter, Michael Sharkey and Paul Fussell.
