Correspondence from John Brooke in Melbourne to his brother and sister in England. He describes his voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne on an unnamed ship, his first lodgings in Melbourne, and his prosperous life as a storekeeper. He gives a detailed account of prices for goods and services in the colony and urges his family and friends to come out to Australia to make their fortunes. Also, an advertisement for the auction of the insolvent estate of T.C. Brooke, 1869, copied from an unnamed source.

John Brooke's companions on the voyage and in Melbourne were "Eliza" and "Tom". Their ship landed in Melbourne on 12 Oct. 1852. Their shop was situated at 125 Swanston Street. Thomas Collier Brooke took up the pastoral run of Worrough in July 1854 (with John Brooke), Tallarook in Feb. 1864, and Ghin Ghin in Dec. 1864. From the description of Letters. 1852-1853.
