Hurd writes to an admirerer regarding the disposition of the portrait he painted of President Johnson, which Johnson refused to hang. "I'm sorry I can't give you information as to the exhibition ... It was commissioned by the Historical Society of Washington and it would be up to them to make what ever use of it they saw fit."
