Letter, 19 Oct. 1851, from James Blackburn Jnr. at Golden Point, Ballarat. Describes life on the Ballarat goldfields, especially at the New Diggings and at Golden Point. The geological and geographical features of the area are described as is the atmosphere of the diggings at night.

James Blackburn Jnr. was born at Barnet, Herts, United Kingdom. He travelled to Tasmania in the barque Canada, and joined his father and mother in Hobart in Apr. 1842. He was the eldest of ten children who, with their parents, left Launceston for Melbourne on the Shamrock on 16 Apr. 1849.
