Regiment organized at Elmira, N.Y., 20 May 1861, from the 65th and 74th Militia. Men were recruited principally from Erie County. The regiment left the state on 18 June 1861, and saw service in Maryland and Virginia, including McDowell's advance on Richmond, Pope's Campaign, Bull Run, and Antietam. Born in Buffalo, N.Y. 6 May 1833. Served as lieutenant colonel of the 21st Regiment, N.Y.S.V., the first Buffalo regiment recruited for service during the Civil War, then as colonel of the 94th Regiment, N.Y.S.V. At the end of the war he was mustered out as brigadier-general and major-general by brevet.
