Artist; art administrator; lecturer; consultant. Cancel was born in New York City in 1952. In 1978, at the age of 25, Cancel was appointed Executive Director of the Bronx Museum of the Arts, where he served until 1991. While at the museum, he received a fellowhip from the National Endowment for the Arts to research Latin American art.
