O'Farrell was appointed Surveyor-General of Alta California in 1843. He is known for surveying and mapping the city of San Francisco. He was also involved in surveying many of the ranchos granted by the Mexican government. From the description of Jasper O'Farrell papers, 1844-1864. (California Historical Society).
