General Grant served in the British forces in America and in 1776 returned with the reinforcements under Howe. In his letter he writes in detail about events from September 15, 1776 when the British having just won Brooklyn Heights landed 3 miles above the town and retook it ... "two Battalions were pressed and in danger of being over powered, as great bodies of rebels were endeavouring to get round their flanks ..."
