The John E. Buhler, DDS Papers, 1923-1972, 1.85 cubic feet, document Dr. Buhler's career as a dentist and educator. The collection has been arranged into three series: Correspondence, Personal, and Professional. The Correspondence Series, 1948-1972, .25 cubic feet, contains correspondence relating to Dr. Buhler's retirement from MUSC, letters to Senator Rembert C. Dennis concerning the dentist to patient ratio in South Carolina, and personal correspondence. Correspondents include Senator Rembert C. Dennis, Dr. Herbert Butts (Dr. Buhler's successor as Dean of the Medical University of South Carolina's School of Dental Medicine), and J. Hampton Hoch. The series is arranged alphabetically. The Personal Series, 1923-1970, .50 cubic feet, includes biographical information about Dr. Buhler, his CV, 2 issues of the Arbutus (the annual publication of the junior class of Indiana State University), photographs of his house and children, and a lock of his daughter Karen's hair. The series also includes elementary school certificates for excellent spelling and writing. The series is arranged alphabetically. The Professional Series, 1940-1972, 1.10 cubic feet, includes materials from Dr. Buhler's tenure as Dean of the Indiana State University School of Dental Medicine and Dean of the Medical University of South Carolina's School of Dental Medicine. These records consist of memos, photographs, accreditation and budget materials, speeches, and commencement records. The series also includes records from Dr. Buhler's World War II service. The folder of patient records is restricted. The series has been arranged alphabetically. The series includes a bound copy of memos issued by Dr. Buhler while Dean of the Emory School of Dentistry (housed in a phasebox), as well as a Hanau "Facebow" device (housed in Artifact Box 1). Printed materials from the collection have been cataloged separately.
