John McLoughlin papers, 1825-1856.

Papers (originals and contemporary copies) concerning his relations with American trappers and settlers, and his land claims in Oregon. Includes letters by Courtney M. Walker, Jessy Quinn Thornton, and Joseph Henry Brown, with copies of letters, 1840-1843, to and from Jason Lee, John Record, Francis Ermatinger, George Gary, Lansford W. Hastings, and Robert Shortess; circular letter addressed in McLoughlin's hand to "J.Q. Thornton, esq., Albany" and dated in the same hand; Oregon City, 24th Dec. 1853 (this copy, later given by Thornton to H.H. Bancroft, has in Thornton's hand, written in 1880, the substance of the more detailed reply he made to McLoughlin in 1853). Also includes certification, Dec. 13, 1851, by Edward Hamilton, Secretary, Oregon Territory, with territorial seal, of a portion of item no. 4.

Elwood Evans (1828-1898), born in Philadelphia, went to Oregon Territory in 1851 as deputy collector of customs at Nisqually. From 1859 to 1861, he served as mayor of the newly incorporated town of Olympia, Washington. Born in Mason County, Virginia in 1810, Jessy Quinn Thornton was educated at the University of Virginia where he studied law. He later practiced law in Palmyra and Hannibal Missouri, and in Quincy, Illinois. In 1838 he married Nancy M. Logue at Hannibal. In 1846 he traveled overland to Oregon with his family. Joseph Henry Brown, pioneer and historian of Salem, Oregon, was born near Wilmington, Will County, Illinois, in 1837, and came overland to Oregon with his parents in 1847.
