A collection, chiefly copies, of 44 numbered items (1-45, No. 40 omitted), comprising essays, letters, satires, addresses, and one-act plays, in prose and verse (Spanish and Latin), which originated in New Spain, Spain, Italy, and France; composed principally of anonymous pieces written under pseudonyms. Entered in the Andrade catalogue under the title of the first item, "Derecho de las Yglesias ... " Notable items are 1) "Derecho de las Yglesias Metropolitanas y Cathedrales de las Indias para la prelacion de los Capitulares, i naturales de ellas ..." (n.p., n.d.), a plea for ecclesiastical preferment of native-born Americans; 5) "Papel de Lugares ... " (Puebla, 1731), an academic satire addressed by the Jesuit poet Arriola to his graduating pupils; 19) "Romance Chistoso" (ca. 1767), verses written in exile by the Jesuit José Francisco de Isla; 24) "El Perfecto Religioso Menor ... ," marked "1760," a verse exposition of the Franciscan Rule, by Diego Pardo; 29-30) a satirical plea and related matter in defense of certain apothecaries attacked by Pedro de Vargas, physician to Archbishop Rubio; (Cont.) 32) correspondence between Pope Clement XIII and Charles III of Spain, Rome and Aranjuez, Spain, May 16-27, 1767, on the expulsion of the Jesuits; 35-36) Latin and Spanish versions of the address, Mexico City, January 14, 1771, delivered by the King's representative, Rivadeneira, at the inaugural session of the Fourth Mexican Provincial Council; 37) Spanish translation of address, Paris, December 24, 1603, delivered by Henry IV of France in defense of the Jesuits, and related material.
