The first part of a projected work on Nicaragua and Walker, containing only background material which traces the history of Central America through the period of Spanish domination, the struggle for independence, union with Mexico, and the rise and fall of the Central American Federation, to the eve of William Walker's arrival in Nicaragua in 1855. Includes letter of transmittal to H.H. Bancroft, San Francisco, February 28, 1879, signed "E.J.C. Kewen."

William Walker (May 8, 1824 – September 12, 1860) was an American physician, lawyer, journalist and mercenary who organized several private military expeditions into Latin America, with the intention of establishing English-speaking colonies under his personal control, an enterprise then known as "filibustering".
