Phil. L. Edwards diary, 1837 January 14 to 1837, September 18.

Undated transcript of the original diary, made for Bancroft by Mrs. Laura Morton, Edwards' daughter. Original now in the California State Library. Describes Edwards' journey with Ewing Young from Oregon to California and back, to purchase cattle for the Willamette Cattle Company. He voyaged to California by sea and drove the cattle to Oregon.

Philip Leget Edwards was born in Kentucky on 14 July 1812. In about 1824, he and his family moved to Old Franklin, Missouri. Ten years later, Edwards joined Jason Lee[alpha]s missionary party and went with them to Oregon. During the winter of 1835-1836, he taught at a small school near Champoeg.
