John Charles Frémont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890) was an American explorer, military officer, and politician. He was a US Senator from California, and in 1856 was the first Republican nominee for President of the United States. J.S. Hittell was born December 25, 1825 in Jonestown, Lebanon County, Pa. His family moved to Hamilton, a town in Southwestern Ohio, in 1832. Hittell graduated from "Miami University" in 1843, and returned to Hamilton to practice law with the office of John Woods. In the spring of 1849, Hittell was in Ottawa, Illinois.
