William Clayton letterbooks, [1860-1879].

Letterpress copies of business and personal correspondence, Feb. 25, 1860 - Nov. 25, 1879. Vol. 7 continued to June 2, 1882, by his son, Nephi W. Clayton. Vol. 8 - Letterpress copies, Jan. 4 & 30, 1860; notices, Aug. 25, 1868, of non-acceptance of a draft on the Private Bank of Copenhagen. The business correspondence reflects Clayton's public life as Territorial auditor of public accounts, Territorial recorder of marks and brands, notary public, and secretary of the Deseret Telegraph Company; and personal interests in the mercantile firms of Cronyn and Clayton, and Clayton and Jonasson. Private and family letters interspersed among the business letters reflect the religious, political, social, and cultural life of the period.
