Robert Owen (1771-1858) was born at Newtown, Wales to a working family, his father being employed as the local postmaster. From an early age Owen was encouraged to read and debate, and using this knowledge he was able to mentor the younger children at his school. Aged just 10 he left school and was apprenticed to a Mr James McGuffog, a linen draper from Stamford, Lincolnshire, and, according to his Autobiography, he was independent from his parents from this point onwards. ...

Over the course of five decades, Al Henderson photographed nearly every aspect of Black life in Newark, including Black civic and social leaders in the city. He formed the Al Henderson Orchestra, one of Newark's most famouns bands of the 1930s. Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838) was the founder of a monitorial method of teaching which came to be known as the Lancasterian system of education. Born in England, he opened in 1798 a school to educate inexpensively poor children in the Borough Road neighborhood of London.
