The William Mellon McCord Papers, 27 cubic feet, 1964-1975, document his activities as president of the Medical University of South Carolina. The bulk of the collection contains records created by Dr. McCord that pertain to the administration of the university and the medical hospital. Also included are materials received by Dr. McCord that assisted him in his administrative responsibilities. William Mellon McCord, M.D., Ph.D., was born in the city of Durban, in the province of Natal, Union of South Africa on January 24, 1907. He was the son of a doctor and missionary who opened the McCord Zulu Hospital, which became the first accredited hospital in Africa. Dr. McCord returned to the United States in 1924 to study pre-med at Oberlin College, Ohio.
