Born in Ireland, Peter John Sullivan emigrated to the U.S. with his parents as a child. After military service during the Mexican War, he served as one of the official stenographers in the Senate. Later he practiced law in Cincinnati, Oh. During the U.S. Civil War, he organized several volunteer regiments and served as colonel of the 48th Ohio regiment. Asboth was born in Keszthely, Hungary. When Asboth was 8, his family moved to Zombor (now Sombor in Serbia). Asboth wanted to be a soldier, like his elder brother Lajos, but instead his parents decided he should be an engineer. He studied at the Mining Academy of Selmecbánya and the Institutum Geometricum in Pest.
