Letters, mss., and clippings, 1813-1873, concerning the military career of Robert Ross, especially the burning of Washington, D.C. in 1814. Two letters, 1813 and 1814, from Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, commend Ross for service in battles in the Napoleonic Wars. One letter, 1814, from FitzRoy Somerset (later Lord Raglan) offers Ross a command of a brigade to go to the U.S. Three mss. concerning Ross's behavior in the U.S. and monuments to him; ms. copy of an 1861 letter by Duncan MacDougall, Ross's aide in 1814; ms. extract in French from Jomini's preĢcis de l'art de la guerre. Also ca. 75 clippings, 1814-1873 from British newspapers concerning the Washington campaign.
