Discharge certificate of Private William Cummins, 11 Sept. 1814.

Letter of discharge for William Cummins, who served Captain David Holt's Company of the 17th Regiment U. S. Infantry through Aug. 31, 1814, indicates that "he is entitled to his discharge, but not an honorable one, inconsequence, of cowardly conduct at Camp Meigs in April, & May Eighteen hundred & thirteen, during the seige of that place...."

In June 1812, Congress authorized the expansion of the army from 7 regular infantry regiments to 25. The 17th Infantry Regiment was the second Kentucky regiment, recruited and organized at Georgetown, Kentucky by Col. Samuel Wells.
