Charles Durkee was born December 10, 1805, in Royalton, Windsor County, Vermont. In 1836, he became one of the founders Kenosha, Wisconsin (originally called Southport). He served in the United States Senate as a Republican from 1855 to 1861. He was a memeber of the 1861 Peace Commission. He was the governor of Utah in 1865-1869.
