Volumes of Capt. William Smith of Boston, the first being a logbook of the ship Mary, Smith shipmaster, on a voyage from Boston to Calcutta 3 Jan. - 4 April 1818 presumably for trading; the second a letterbook containing letters, 13 Feb. - 31 May 1812, from William, shipmaster of the schooner Cordelia, to Benjamin Smith and Samuel Cooper, owners of the ship, upon his arrival on a trading voyage at North Carolina and Portugal; and accounts (1812-1817), both in the previous volume and in a third, of several ships, including the Cordelia and the schooner Commodore Hull, on various trading voyages. Also included in the volumes are several drawings of ships and poetry, some by Smith's wife Caroline. (Cont'd) The collection also contains a memoir (and photocopy) of the Smith family of Boston, with genealogical information, written by Boston merchant and ship owner Benjamin Smith, Jr. (1769-1834) in 1829, photocopies of Smith's diaries, 1817-34 (1817-23 fragments only), and book of personal expenses, 1791-1834.
