Christiansburg, Va., family. Four members of the family--James Charlton, W.C. Charlton, Pembroke Charlton, and Oliver H.P. Cardon--were in Company G, 4th Virginia Infantry, or the "Montgomery Fencibles," in the Civil War. Company G was one of forty-nine companies in the Stonewall Brigade." The collection includes letters written by the above mentioned members of the Charlton family, plus Milton Charlton (a member of Company C of the 4th Virginia Infantry), and Davidson Charlton, their father. All the letters are addressed to Oliver Cardon, who resided with the Charltons and was discharged early in the war. The collection also includes transcripts of each letter, a pay voucher and company muster rolls, genealogical materials and other family papers.
