Journal, 1759.

Wolfe's journal is a photostatic copy of the original in the possession of the McCord Museum, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Written during the period 10 May to 7 August 1759, the journal is an interesting study of Wolfe's command of the Quebec Expedition, commencing with the fleet anchored off Barnaby Island, in the St. Lawrence River, and ending with an expression of his determination "to prepare the Troops for a decisive Action," which was to occur on 13 September on the Plains of Abraham. Included are records of the progress of the fleet up the St. Lawrence River, the delays and difficulties in determining the best way to attack the French, the difficulties which arose among his brigadier-generals and fleet admiral over his decisions, and the disastrous results of an attempted frontal attack on the Beauport lines in July. There are also references to Indian attacks, skirmishes with the French, desertions of Americans, daily observations of the enemy, and the fragile state of Wolfe's health.
