The collection contains letters, 1779-1851, of the family members mentioned above. Most of the correspondence concerns family news, e.g., illnesses, births, marriages, James Morris Whiton's studies at Yale and the studies of his sister, Mary Elizabeth, in New Hampshire. There are references to town news in Winchendon and Antrim, the state of religion in the area and in the nation, town politics, a murder in Winchendon, and neighborhood deaths. There is one brief reference to the American Revolution in a 1781 letter of Elijah Whiton. The folder includes a photograph of the Israel Whiton house in Winchendon.

This collection represents five generations of the Whiton family of Ashford and Winchendon, Mass., and Antrim, N. H. Elijah Whiton (1714-1784) was a prosperous farmer, cooper, and justice of the peace in Ashford. His son, Israel Whiton (1754-1819), became a physician and served in the Continental Army before settling in Winchendon with his wife, Dorothy Crosby Whiton (1760-1826). Their son, John Milton Whiton (1785-1856), graduated from Yale in 1805 and served as Presbyterian minister in Antrim ...
