Diaries, 1776-1778.

Smith's diaries contain records of his wartime experiences as his company campaigned under General Washington from New York to Trenton and Princeton and then retreated into Pennsylvania. This period (September to November 1776) is included in both volumes of this diary, the second containing a fuller account with slight variations in detail. The second volume continues with sporadic entries for 1777 and January 1778. It describes Smith's movement in the New York and New Jersey area. The diary contains extensive accounts of the Rhode Island regiment's occupation of Fort Mercer, on the Delaware River, and confrontation with the enemy, many of whom were Hessians, in an effort to protect Philadelphia from invasion. The diaries provide details of Smith's daily lot as a soldier, report enemy encounters, conditions of their encampments, marches, and war casualties. He also listed deserters from the Continental Army and the British forces, and punishments given for treachery and infractions of military regulations.
