Correspondence, 1794-1826.

The correspondence of the Pinkham and Gardner families of Nantucket, Mass., and Kennebunk, Me., covers the period 1794 to 1826 and includes the letters of Paul Pinkham (1736-1799), keeper of the Great Point light at Nantucket, mapmaker, and pilot; his brothers-in-law Silas Gardner (1753-1826), a wealthy shipper, and George Swain (1762-1848), lightkeeper and farmer; his son, Paul Pinkham, Jr. (1763-1807), a successful trader, and his son's wife Mercy Cobb Pinkham ( -1835). Several letters were written by other family members, such as Silas Gardner's niece Hannah Gardner (1772-1848). The twenty-three letters mainly refer to family matters, such as births and deaths of relatives and Nantucket friends, daily concerns, and requests for money to help support dependent relatives. One letter by Silas' nephew Uriah Gardner ( - ) in 1812 details the attack and capture of his ship by Spaniards and his imprisonment for several months. Included also is an eleven-page weather record for Kennebunk, Me. for 1807 to 1809.
