Business records, 1847-1890.

This collection consists of a font book for the company, with entries dating from 1847 to 1872. It records the style of the type produced, its weight, the mould used, the person who cast it, and to whom the font (a complete set of type of one size and style) was sold. Also in the collection is an indexed order book for numerous newspapers, including the Boston Globe, Boston Transcript, Providence Journal, and the Lowell Sun. These records range from 1885 to 1890.

Michael Dalton (1800-1879) and Sewell Phelps (1797- ) learned the craft of typefounding under Edward Haskell, manager of the Boston Type Foundry. Phelps was a printer from 1818 to 1829. In 1845, Phelps and Dalton purchased the Dickinson Type Foundry and the firm of Phelps, Dalton and Company became a leading eastern typefoundry. In 1864 Dalton sold his interest in the company.
