Our First Men: A Calendar of Wealth, Fashion, and Gentility ... extra-illustrated book, 1795-1893.

The volume is an extra-illustrated edition of "Our First Men:" A Calendar of Wealth, Fashion, and Gentility . . . (Boston: Published by all the Booksellers, 1846). The book consists of printed biographical notes on persons in Boston, Mass., who were believed to be worth in excess of $100,000, and includes reproductions of portraits of many of the people and manuscript letters of twenty-two of the people listed in the volume. The letters were tipped in to the volume by an unidentified person and are dated 1795 to 1893. It appears that some were addressed to people in the publishing business, others to the Rev. Andrew Bigelow (1795-1877), Minister-at-Large to the poor of Boston, concerning donations, and several were addressed to attorneys. The contents concern a wide variety of subjects. Included among the letter-writers are: Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886), Josiah Quincy (1772-1864), Lucius Manlius Sargent (1776-1867), Harrison Gray Otis (1765-1848), and Artemas Ward (1762-1847). The latter wrote of his inability to attend the celebrations in Lexington, Mass., on April 19, 1835, and Charles Francis Adams wrote about the design and title of a volume intended for publication.
