The collection includes an 1872 letter of introduction written by George Frisbie Hoar (1826-1904), Worcester statesman, for a European visit of Philip L. Moen and an 1873 petition to the Mass. Supreme Court on behalf of Philip L. Moen concerning the intention of Worcester City Council to put a road through Moen property. George Fordyce Blake, Jr. wrote a tribute to Philip W. Moen, dated 1904, which was also included in the miscellaneous papers. The octavo volume is a diary of Philip W. Moen. It contains entries from January to early June, 1893, which recorded some of his daily activities, his visitors, financial conditions, and travel experiences. In addition, this collection contains three folio volumes of Philip W. Moen's letter books, 1898-1900, 1900-1901, and 1901-1902. The first and third books are indexed by recipient's name and the second by date. The letters concern a large range of Moen's personal and company business. Amongst the personal letters are many written to his sisters, Sophie Moen (1860-1925) and Alice Moen Childs ( - ) and her husband, Arthur Edward Childs discussing Moen Family financial matters. Numerous others deal with arrangements for the renovation, upkeep, and stocking of Moen's Shrewsbury estate. There are also several letters concerning Moen's prize show dogs. The company business letters include information covering the sale to American Steel and Wire Company and Moen's involvement and responsibilities during his service to this company.

This collection contains papers pertaining to Philip Louis Moen (1824-1891) and a diary, letters and one document generated by his son, Philip Washburn Moen (1857-1904). Philip L. Moen was one of the founders of the wire industry in Worcester, Mass. He entered a partnership in 1850 with Ichabod Washburn (1798-1868) and succeeded Washburn in 1868 as president of the Washburn and Moen Co.
