William Mixter (1809-1884), son of Jason Mixter (1772-1850) and Susan Cutler Mixter (1777?-1861), was born in Hardwick, Mass. He attended Harvard College, but poor health caused him to withdraw before graduation. He became a merchant in his father's store in Hardwick and served in numerous town offices including treasurer, clerk, and selectman.
